Sandown
Sandown Bay has one of the largest beaches on the Isle of Wight framed to the north by the large chalky cliffs of Culver Down, a National Trust area. Sandown bay is also the location of the two adjoining resorts of Sandown and Shankin. With its large sandy beach, Sandown has been a popular resort since Victorian times. It has a good selection of hotels and restaurants and other family favourites including a road train. It also has a victorian pier which has featured a number of top performers over the years. The popular Isle of Wight Zoo, is located in Sandown in what used to be a victorian granite fort, built to protect the area from French attacks. An older fort built on the beach during Henry VIII's reign has been washed away over the years. Sandown Bay is also noted as a good location for finding fossils, so you might just get lucky with your bucket and spade! Today most visitors to Sandown are intent on making the most of their holiday in an ideal location and it is easy to see why they return year after year. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
