Ventnor
Ventor is another popular resort on the Isle of Wight. It is located near St Boniface Cliff which is the highest point of the Island. Being southerly facing, and with a sheltered cliff, Ventnor has a mild climate. The former fishing village became a health spa during the Victorian era, as its atmosphere was believed to be beneficial for Tuberculosis sufferers. They stayed in the Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest and were taken there by the train on the railway line from Ryde. The hospital was later demolished and turned into the Botannical gardens and they are able to grow some subtropical plants that are not easily grown elsehere in the UK. The railway station closed in 1966. A lot of memorabilia from this interesting past are on show at the Ventnor Heritage Museum. Ventnor has a good sandy beach and a number of hotels, guest houses and restaurants. | |||||||||||||||||||||
