Ryde
Ryde is the largest town on the Isle of Wight. It has a good selection of hotels and restaurants and other traditional seaside facilities including large beaches, boating lake, amusements and a promenade. The beach has shallow water, so it was necessary to build a pier to enable ferry boats to use Ryde successfully. Ryde Pier is one of the longest piers in the country being 681 metres long and dominates the outlook. It was built in 1813 and has the terminal of the catamaran service from Portsmouth and the Island railway. Ryde also has a hovercraft service that goes to Southsea, Portsmouth. Ryde also has a large carnival in August that is one of the highlights in the Isle of Wight calendar. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
