Newport
Newport is the county town of the Isle of Wight and is located in the centre of the island on the River Medina. It is located where the river stops being navagable and was once a thriving inland port until boats became larger. Much of the once busy quay has now has been developed for alternative uses including galleries and shops and warehouse flats. Newport also has some interesting Victorian and Georgian architecture. Newport has a history dating back to roman times and the Newport Roman Villa is a popular attraction that is open to the public. The nearby Carisbrooke Castle has also played an important role in the history of the area and is best known as the prison of King Charles I before his trial. Newport also is the location of the revived Isle of Wight Pop Music festival which takes place in Seaclose Park. | |||||||||||||||||||||
