Cowes

Cowes Harbour

Cowes a town largely associated with sailing and it is located on the North of the Isle of Wight and is split into 2 by the River Medina. East Cowes has the harbour where the ferry from Southampton docks while West Cowes has the marina. The two towns are linked by a floating bridge, chain ferry.

The name is believed to have been drived from the name of the sandbanks on either side of the river which at one point resembled cows. During Henry VIII's reign there were forts built on the sand banks, but only the West Cowes fort still survives as what is now Cowes Castle. This castle is currently used by the Royal Yacht Squadron an exclusiive sailing club started in the early 19th century and who included King George IV as a member. In 1826 they organised a 3 day regatta, which later developed into Cowes Week, one of the biggest events in the world sailing calendar. This is usually held on the first week of August when the town is buzzing with the rich and famous sailing enthusiasts of the world.

In spite of its popularity in the summer, Cowes maintains a small town feel with a good selection of shops, restaurants and has a relaxed friendly atmosphere.

The magnificent Osborne House, once the favoured residence of Queen Victoria is also located on the outskirts of East Cowes.
